MEASUREMENTS: Approximately Coasters 3" Diameter. Box 3" H.
MATERIALS: Wood, Lacquer and Paint.
COLORS: Black and Gold
CONDITION: Beautiful condition. These are vintage so there will be wear and use noted. They have been pro-loved, therefore they will not come in new condition. The coasters are in marvelous condition given their age. The box in which their housed, the shine on the lacquer is dull, there are some minor chips, largest one seen in IMAGE 3, but there are only a couple in total.

Artist: Not marked. Most artist of lacquer wood not sign their pieces. There may be some signed from famous artists.

DESCRIPTION:
These are truly marvelous set of 9 coasters with box unlike any we've seen in our time. Done is wood and lacquer which is an intense process, these beautiful scalloped coasters are hand painted with gold botanical motifs, foliage design. Each coaster is very refined in that they are delicate and truly feel luxurious and beautiful to the touch. The box in which they are housed has lost much of its luster over time, but for us we find this charming.
1950's could be older. We cannot verify if these are Occupied Japan 1947 - 1952. When we purchased these back in the day, we were told by dealer, they were old, 40's or older, but to air on the side of caution, we have dated them later.

ABOUT LACQUERWARE:

Lacquer has been used in Japanese art for thousands of years since 7,000 BC and perfected over the centuries. The process of lacquering something is painstaking as it takes layers of liquid lacquer to build the lacquer and with each layer, it must dry and the design would be applied thereafter. Lacquerware in its time was forged by master craftsmen.
There were different design techniques used for embellishing the lacquerware, one of which is well known is maki-e where gold or silver powder is sprinkled over the lacquer to enforce the design.
Another technique involves the master craftsman to draw his/her picture into the lacquer while it is still wet and sealing it with yet more layers of lacquer. Finally it is rubbed with charcoal to bring out the design which comes through flush with the rest of the surface.
In the set in this listing it is likely like the former, hand painted more in line with 20th century design technique.

Most lacquerware items were never signed by their master craftsmen. Some more famous artists did, like Hatsune no Chodo, but they are not common. Therefore, most pieces your find in the lacquerware world will not have any hallmark.

Acquire through one of our antiquing adventures. They have been packaged away in our home for sometime. When they were discovered, we were tickled at their undeniable beauty.

IDEAS ON HOW TO USE: These are usable in any space. It is not confined to Asian Decor Home, but quite the opposite, in that they would look extraordinarily magnificent in a classic or contemporary space.
Due to their delicate nature, these would not be coasters for daily use, but for a formal dinner and space. They may be showcased on a side table, but use with discrimination to preserve their longevity.
