Bakelite was patented on December 7, 1909, by American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York . The synthetic plastic was revolutionary for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties orders in many applications, jewelry was one popular application. The "retro" appeal of old Bakelite products has made them very collectible. The original colors were black, brown, red, yellow, gray, green, blue. Sometimes, there was a combination of colors used. Once Baekeland's heat and pressure patents expired in 1927, Bakelite Corporation faced serious competition from other companies. Because molded Bakelite incorporated fillers to give it strength, it tended to be made in concealing dark colors.

This festive pair of dangles has a tropical feel, with the relief design of berries/fruit. The larger, marbled, amber disk is layered, first with a milky white disk, then a smaller amber colored disk. There is a creamy white color applied to the relief pattern.
