Victorian Love Token Sterling Studs; Cufflinks: Love Tokens orders "DJH" "JHD"

These large dress shirt studs date to the late-Victorian era, made from two Canadian Victoria sterling silver coins (25-cent pieces). The fronts each elaborately engraved with the initials “JH D” or “HJ D”; reverse design features the left facing bust image of Queen Victoria with the words “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA” (latin for “By the Grace of God, Queen”) and “CANADA”. Measuring ~23.5 mm (15/16"), the coins were minted in the years 1870–1901; in .925 silver; back fitting/shank tested for sterling silver fineness; total weight = 11.5 grams. Wonderful antique condition. I have not polished this pair which has developed a lovely patina—a slight shine combined with darkened areas. Love tokens are a hand-engraved coin that was once in circulation and represented tokens of affection. Love tokens were also worn by men; denoting a monogram or the fraternal order he was affiliated with. Dress studs can also be worn as cufflinks; for him or her!
