A straight razor is a razor with a blade that can fold into its handle. Straight edge razors are also called open razors and cut-throat razors.
In 1848, Jacob Wiss founded the Jacob Wiss Cutlery. Production of Wiss razors ended in the latter part of 1923. After production stopped they continued to fill orders for razors with tangs made by others. The market for straight razors collapsed because the U.S. government gave safety razors to all the GIs returning from WWI.
